The village of Tideswell
lies at the heart of the Peak National Park, the first National Park to be
established in the British Isles. It boasts a fine Norman church, the
"Cathedral of the Peak", and is a convenient centre for walks in the
beautiful valleys of Millers Dale, Tideswell Dale, Monks Dale and Chee Dale. Here
the Tideswell Dale Rock Shop has been supplying fine mineral specimens to
museums, educational establishments and private collectors for over 25 years.
Shops like it, "Petrifaction Museums", have been a feature of the
Derbyshire Peak District for 300 years. The Peak has several unique deposits of
ornamental stones and in addition to offering a wide variety of mineral and
fossil "petrifactions" for sale the "petrifactioneers"
worked these ornamental materials into items of jewellery and other small objets
d'art. These materials include:
Blue John A banded blue, purple and white variety of fluorite.
Ashford Black Marble A jet black limestone. This is inlaid with other coloured stones and shells in floral designs after the style of Florentine pietra dure
We are proud to have continued this rich tradition and can offer visitors a selection of worked examples of these materials. And for the mineral collector we have the largest range of mineral specimens in the U.K.
